What it feels like

  • Numbness, tingling, burning or "walking on pebbles" sensations, usually starting in the feet
  • Unsteadiness, especially in the dark or on uneven ground, and more trips or falls
  • Weakness in the feet or hands, cramping, or pain that is worse at night

Why it happens

Peripheral neuropathy is damage to the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. Diabetes is the most common cause, followed by chemotherapy, vitamin B12 deficiency, alcohol, thyroid and kidney conditions, some medications and, in a good proportion of cases, no identifiable cause. The medical diagnosis and management of the underlying cause sits with your doctor; what we address is the loss of balance, strength and confidence that follows, and the nerve pain that disturbs sleep and daily life.

How we can help

Physiotherapy assessment measures your balance, strength, sensation and walking pattern, and identifies your specific fall risks. Treatment then builds a progressive balance and strengthening program, teaches strategies for safe walking and footwear, and addresses the stiffness that comes from moving less. Acupuncture is used by many people with neuropathy to help manage burning and tingling symptoms, and can be combined with your physiotherapy here. We work alongside your family doctor or specialist and will flag anything that needs their attention.

Common questions

Can physiotherapy reverse nerve damage?

No treatment reliably regrows damaged nerves, and we won't promise that. What rehabilitation reliably does is improve balance, strength, walking confidence and fall risk — which is what most affects daily life — and acupuncture may help with symptom intensity for some people.

Is acupuncture safe if I have reduced sensation?

Yes, with appropriate precautions. Our acupuncturist is aware of the risks that come with reduced sensation and poorer healing in the feet, uses sterile single-use needles and adapts point selection accordingly. Let us know about any wounds or circulation problems before treatment.

Most extended health plans cover treatment, and we direct bill — including ICBC and WorkSafeBC claims. Direct billing submits your claim for you; your insurer decides what it pays, and any uncovered portion is payable at your visit. Unsure where to start? Call to book a free 15-minute phone consult.
