Chronic Pain Treatment in Surrey, BC
Pain that has outlasted the injury that started it needs a different approach than the one that didn't work the first time.
What it feels like
- Pain lasting longer than three months, often spreading beyond the original area
- Flare-ups triggered by stress, poor sleep or small increases in activity, not just physical strain
- Fatigue, low mood, and a shrinking list of activities you feel safe doing
Why it happens
Pain is produced by the nervous system as a protective response, and in persistent pain that system becomes over-sensitive — sounding the alarm at loads and movements that are no longer dangerous. Tissue healing has usually finished; what persists is a sensitised system, deconditioning from avoiding activity, disrupted sleep and the stress of living with pain. This doesn't mean the pain is imagined. It means the most effective treatment targets the sensitivity and the deconditioning, not just the original sore spot.
How we can help
Treating chronic pain well takes time and more than one tool, which is where having physiotherapy, massage therapy and acupuncture under one roof matters. Your physiotherapist leads with a thorough assessment and clear explanation of what is driving your pain, then builds a graded, paced activity program that expands what you can do without triggering flare-ups. Massage helps with muscle guarding and sleep; acupuncture can help modulate pain and the stress response. Progress is measured in function — what you are doing again — as much as in pain scores, and we coordinate with your doctor and any other providers involved.

Common questions
I've tried physio before and it didn't help. Why would this be different?
A fair question. Treatment aimed at a healed tissue often doesn't help persistent pain. An approach built around a sensitised nervous system — education, pacing, graded exposure to movement and good sleep — is different in kind, and it is what current guidelines recommend. We will be upfront about what we think can realistically change.
Is it covered by my insurance?
Physiotherapy, massage therapy and acupuncture are each typically covered under extended health plans up to your plan's limits, and we direct bill. Because chronic pain care often uses more than one discipline, it is worth checking each category's limit with your insurer.
