Hurt in a Car Accident? How ICBC Covers Physiotherapy & Massage in BC

← Back to blog

After a crash, most people wait too long to start treatment — often because they think they need approval, a referral, or a lawyer first. In BC, you don't. Here's how ICBC treatment coverage actually works, and how to use it.

You have pre-approved treatment waiting

If your accident happened within the last 12 weeks, ICBC pre-approves a block of treatments under Enhanced Care — including 25 physiotherapy visits and 12 massage therapy sessions, plus visits for chiropractic, kinesiology, acupuncture and counselling. You don't need a doctor's referral, and you don't need ICBC's permission to start. You just need a claim number.

How to start treatment (three steps)

  1. Report your accident to ICBC and get your claim number.
  2. Book with a clinic in the ICBC Recovery Network — like Matrix Rehab. Bring your claim number and date of accident to the first visit.
  3. We bill ICBC directly. No paperwork on your side, no paying up front for approved treatments.

Why starting early matters

Whiplash, back strain and shoulder injuries respond dramatically better to early treatment. Waiting weeks lets protective muscle guarding set in, turns acute pain into persistent pain, and makes recovery slower and more expensive. The 12-week pre-approval window exists precisely because early care works.

What if you need more than the pre-approved visits?

If your recovery needs more sessions after the initial block, we submit a treatment extension request to ICBC on your behalf with clinical justification. Most reasonable extensions for active recovery plans are granted — it's routine, and we handle it.

What your first visit looks like

A physiotherapist assesses your injuries, documents them for your claim, and starts treatment the same day — typically a mix of manual therapy, guided movement and a simple home program. Massage therapy is usually layered in to manage pain and muscle guarding between physio sessions.
